AN OVERVIEW OF MENTAL HEALTH
AMONG AYP
Adolescence and young adulthood are crucial developmental stages marked by significant changes in physical, emotional, and social domains. Mental health problems often emerge or worsen during this period, making AYP a vulnerable population.
However, research shows that mental health disorders are prevalent among AYP, with approximately 20% of young people experiencing a mental health problem every given year (Kessler et al., 2005). This is a result of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm, substance abuse, and the impact of social media on mental health with a profound effect on various aspects of AYP’s lives such as academic performance, relationships, self-esteem, which have a long-time implication on both the physical health because physical health is significantly impacted by poor mental health. These implications include but are not limited to reduced educational attainment, social isolation, and increased risk of suicide among others. (World Health Organization, 2020).
Moreso, Mental health among AYP is influenced by numerous factors such as biological, environmental, and sociocultural factors which cover genetic predisposition, family dynamics, socioeconomic status, peer relationships, and societal pressures. Thus, these are seen and examined by mental health researchers as a significant determinant of mental health outcomes (National Institute of Mental Health, 2019).
Addressing mental health concerns is highly significant among AYP which requires a comprehensive approach involving early detection, prevention, and intervention. These strategies are evidence-based, shown and adopted over the years, with positive outcomes. It covers psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, peer support programs, and school-based mental health initiatives (Patel et al., 2018). Making resilience a protective factor enhances well-being, fosters supportive environments, promotes healthy coping mechanisms, and encourages self-care practices (World Health Organization, 2021).
In addition, the role of education and policy can never be said to be exaggerated, rather it has been underrated because education and policy play pivotal roles in addressing mental health challenges among AYP seeing the need for mental health training and education among students’ teachers and parents, developing policies that prioritize mental health support and funding (World Health Organization, 2021).
Conclusively, Mental health among AYP is a complex issue that requires multi-faceted interventions and support. By understanding the challenges, recognizing the impact, and implementing effective strategies. We can promote positive mental health outcomes and empower AYP to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
You are most welcome.
